Billy Lockett: "I've been obsessed with Ludovico Einaudi most of my life"

In the last of our Lockdown Lives, we speak to Billy Lockett, the singer-songwriter who recorded an entire Lockdown album – Together At Home

Billy Lockett

Everybody talked a good game about being productive in lockdown but Billy Lockett only went a recorded an album.

A collection of modern classical piano tracks, Together At Home sonically encapsulates what's been a very weird few months – whether you've reinvented yourself or barely left the sofa.

It's the perfect interview to end our Lockdown Life series – you can find the past entries here.

We'll see you at the bar.

Billy, take it away!

Life

What upcoming project(s) are you most excited about?

I'm really looking forward to focusing on my main debut album now that I've finished the classical side of me.

I've really enjoyed the classical music but now it's time to start singing again.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment?

I think my proudest achievement would be selling out Shepherd's Bush Empire or playing on the Late Late Show with James Corden that was pretty surreal!

If you could change one thing about your career, what would it be?

I think it would be to tell myself not to worry so much, I've always tended to panic about things not working instead of living in the moment and enjoying the journey.

What do you hope to achieve that you haven’t yet?

Obviously a number 1 album would be amazing but my main focus is to achieve creating an album I love and can be proud of for the rest of my life.

Outside of your family, who is / was your biggest inspiration?

It's gonna have to be Ludovico Einaudi, he's the reason I ever started playing piano and I've been obsessed with him most of my life.

Tell us something nobody knows about you…

I have Tourettes which is a nightmare but I've learnt to deal with it now haha.

Lockdown

How are you finding lockdown?

Lockdown has actually been kinda nice!

I've just spent my time in the studio working on the music and it's been kinda therapeutic.

I think I've enjoyed the slower pace of life.

Best thing about lockdown?

I think the best thing is lay-ins in the morning although I've never been an early riser anyway haha.

Worst thing about lockdown?

Worst thing is not being able to go to a restaurant, I really miss eating somewhere nice.

Top tip for surviving lockdown?

Top tip would be to take it easy and learn to relax and follow the new pace of life.

There's a lot of positives coming from this not just negatives.

If you could be locked down with one person, alive or dead, who would it be?

If I could be in lock down with anyone it would be my dad.

What are you most looking forward to doing once lockdown is over?

I'm really looking forward to playing bowling with my mates and most importantly touring again, I really miss playing live.

Nothing beats that.

Billy Lockett's album of modern classical piano tracks 'Together At Home' is out on all digital streaming platforms and stores on 26 June
