Crafted in western Poland, Król I begins with organically grown heritage rye, cultivated by artisanal farmers committed to preserving strains that might otherwise have slipped into obscurity. That rye forms the spirit’s backbone, while mineral-rich local water helps retain the nuances of the land in the final liquid. It is distilled five times at Poland’s Old Distillery, one of the country’s longest-standing distilleries, resulting in a vodka with clarity, texture and genuine sense of place.
Its arrival is well timed. Vodka is firmly back in favour with both consumers and the trade, and the UK remains one of Europe’s biggest markets for the spirit, accounting for around 35 per cent of the category. At The Global Spirits Masters Awards, one of the industry’s most respected blind-tasting competitions, it picked up both Master and Taste Master medals in the vodka category. Judges praised its “citrus-forward, clean nose with subtle flinty, limestone notes”, describing it as “engaging yet understated”, before noting a “creamy palate layered with honey, fudge, herbs and citrus, and a soft, luxurious finish that lingers with finesse”.
The brand’s story began, fittingly, behind the bar. A request from a Mayfair venue for a vodka with genuine distinction sent its founders – a father-and-son team – to Poland’s historic distilling heartland in search of something more exacting.
