There was a time when photography was purely a tool to record and document human existence. But after the Second World War, the medium began to be used in advertising, its gaze systematically turned towards the body as a tool for consumerism and sensuality. (You’ve seen Mad Men, right?)
Since the early 2000s, the creative arc has come full circle. Fashion photography, along with its incorporation of the celebrity, is now a tool to define and record our contemporary aesthetic, consumer mentality and collective creativity. Of course, if you happen to buy some sexy patterned stockings as a result, no one’s going to complain. Unless you wear them to the office – and your name’s Gary.
In celebration of its ten-year anniversary, Opera Gallery is presenting Raw Footage, a group photography exhibition focusing on the meeting point between commercial and artistic photography – and here are a few highlights from the show. Just don’t go getting any ideas, Gary.
