In the bustling streets of Angel Islington’s Upper Street welcomes its newest attraction: Sticks’n’Sushi. I have always been an admirer of Japanese cuisine – its culinary artistry, bold flavours, delightful textures and the simple joy of wielding chopsticks – so visiting Sticks’n’Sushi was a no-brainer. I was accompanied by my friend who shares the same enthusiasm. This global franchise is set apart due to its innovative fusion of Danish and Japanese culinary traditions, making it a dynamic addition to the London scene.
The interior is peak minimalism. The open-plan restaurant features a lounge, bar and kitchen with a natural hardwood interior influenced by Japanese elements, paying homage to the harmonious blend of Scandinavian and Japanese design. Clean lines, dimmed lights, and an inviting warmth create a calming ambience, the essence of cross-cultural elegance.
We scan through the drink menu struggling to decide from the array of classics. To get the ultimate experience, no better choice than cocktails of course. My favourite from the listed labels was the Whisky Miso Sour – a delicate blend of Toki whisky, peach liqueur and honey cordial – a perfect choice for a sweet tooth. “The drinks are so good; do you want to try mine?” my friend offered. Her Yuzu Zoo, as anticipated, was nothing short of delightful.

Service flowed effortlessly, with each meal introduced, explained and delivered promptly, reflecting the restaurant's sophisticated approach. The team spirit is evident in the air as their voices coordinate reverberating through space into a Japanese greeting ritual. “It’s a handshake to keep staff energised”, our waiter explains as my friend and I smile at the sentiment.
Sticks’n’Sushi continued to impress - this time, with their unforgettable dining experience. Their open kitchen offers a tantalising glimpse into the artistry behind each dish, hinting at the craftsmanship that makes this restaurant a true gem. To begin, guests are presented with a warm, moist cloth to cleanse their hands, a gesture setting the stage for the feast to come.
The restaurant hit the hammer on the nail with its bountiful selection of sushi and yakitori dishes, spoiling diners for choice. Their À la carte, sashimi, nigiri, salad, chirashi and maki menu features a signature dish titled Spoil Yourself – and I suggest you do. Every bite was gold, leaving only one regret – that the experience had to end.
For the grand finale: dessert. My friend and I share the Karameru dish; a decadent pairing of ice creams draped in miso caramel. One comes topped with white chocolate cookie crumble, while the other features hazelnut nougatine and dark chocolate – a perfect balance of sweetness and texture to end the meal on a luxurious note.]
