Vintage car lovers: get ready for some serious eye candy courtesy of RM Sotheby's, whose European flagship classic car auction takes place on 7 September at Battersea Evolution. Better brush off the cheque book…

The Budget Option: 1965 Fiat 500
For £15k, you can buy yourself a very reliable, very boring Ford Focus. OR you can throw caution to the wind, as any self-respecting Italian would, and invest in an iconic 1960s wondercar – a vintage Fiat 500. It’s less than ten-feet long, but size ain’t everything – it’ll fit four passengers (just about), and this 1965 model features an upgraded engine that can chug along happily at 60mph, making it ideal for a city runabout. It might boast inimitable old-school style, but this version makes a cheeky nod to modernity by incorporating a sound system which can be controlled by your smartphone. Although the main perk is getting to look like an extra from La Dolce Vita as you sit in traffic.
Estimate: £10,000-£14,000

The Bargain Option: 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2-litre Fixed Head Coupe
Enzo Ferrari called the Jaguar E-Type the most beautiful car ever made. So how you can still pick one up for just £35,000 in any kind of condition – let alone mint – is beyond us. At the core of this 1966 Series 1 is a 4.2-litre engine offering 265bhp (83 extra foot-pounds of torque compared to the smaller 3.8-litre versions. It still boasts its original interior, and has been upgraded with a magnetic ignition and cooling fan. It’s only had two owners from new – both of them Swiss, so you can bet it hasn’t been driven very fast. And hey, if it’s good enough for Enzo…
Estimate: £35,000-£45,000

The Blowout Option: 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder
You’ve had a good year, have you? A very good year, you say. Well, you could do worse than to splash it all on a car that’s got star quality and sex appeal in droves. Maybe it’s the Miami Vice pedigree, or that long, sweeping bonnet, but Daytona prices have been rising exponentially over the last few years – and they show no sign of slowing. This particular model is exceptionally rare – it’s one of only 121 ever built, and comes with just 3,805 miles on the clock. Not only was it one of only five Spiders ordered in this colour combination, but it’s also the only one to have this exact exterior/interior hue. If you’re after it, get ready to square up to the likes of Chris Evans for the pink slips – he recently paid £2.27m for a Daytona Spyder.
Estimate: £2m-2.4m
