There’s a strong case for crowning Sea Containers the coolest hotel in London. Its striking interior design and sculptures are enough to make the Tate Modern go weak at the knees.
It’s home to Lyaness, one of the best cocktail bars in the world. (And that’s not even the one with the incredible rooftop views – that’s the hotel’s other bar, 12th Knot.)
And it has a suite entirely dedicated to 1980s soap-opera classic Dynasty. Ironically, nothing quite says ‘right now’ more than a retro throwback.
The vibe
Niall Clutton
First, some history. Sea Containers London takes its name from the building’s original tenant, Sea Containers Ltd, a global shipping and container-leasing company that moved into the newly built South Bank landmark in the late 1970s.
When the property was later transformed into a hotel, the name was kept as a nod to its maritime past – a decision that has shaped the entire identity of the space.
Today, the hotel leans into that heritage with subtle nautical cues, from the sleek, cruise-liner curves of its interiors to the river-facing terraces that echo the glamour of transatlantic travel.
Its position on the Thames only strengthens the connection: a building once defined by global trade has evolved into a contemporary destination for design, dining and hospitality.
Food and drink
Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, its F&B offering is enough to warrant the kind of evening where you wish you had booked a room.
First up is Lyaness. Crafted by renowned mixologist Ryan Chetiyawardana (aka ‘Mr Lyan’), it delivers boundary-pushing cocktails built around imaginative ingredients. Expect inventive combinations, Insta-ready presentation and a bold, playful atmosphere that sets the tone for the rest of your visit.
Sea Containers Restaurant serves modern, ingredient-led British and American-inspired dishes in a relaxed riverside setting. Shareable small plates, seasonal mains, and a friendly, informal vibe make it ideal for everything from brunch to dinner. There’s something particularly enjoyable about watching everyone on their morning commute to the City while you work your way through the generous buffet.
The aforementioned rooftop bar is 12th Knot – a breezy, stylish space perfect for sundowners, cocktails and DJs soundtracking your weekend as well as the views across the Thames.
The suites
When it’s time to retire, you’re spoilt for choice here. Allow me to direct you to the newly reimagined Cabin Suites. Conceived by Jacu Strauss, Creative Director of Lore Group, in partnership with Vinterior, these four suites comprise a curated journey through 150 years of cruise-liner style. Each suite pays tribute to a different design era, brought to life through carefully sourced vintage and antique pieces. The result is a series of spaces that blend historical character with modern comfort, each with its own unmistakable personality.
In chronological order, we kick off with the Edwardian Cabin Suite – a nod to the elegance of early transatlantic travel, pairing rich mahogany with upholstered armchairs and antique accents that speak to the refinement of the 1900s.
Then you have the Art Deco Cabin Suite – all bold lines and monochrome confidence, with Swedish-walnut notes and vintage pieces delivering a fresh take on 1930s glamour.
The Mid-Century Cabin Suite is a tribute to 1950s-1960s cool: chrome details, warm wood panelling, Italian wall lights and powder-blue seating that channel the era’s effortless sophistication.
And then there’s The Dynasty Cabin Suite. Naturally, as a child of the 1980s, I booked this quicker than you can say “Who shot JR?” (Yes – I know that was Dallas not Dynasty.)
The suite embodies the unapologetic boldness of the 1980s, with the attention to detail of an HBO set decorator.
A few highlights include a Vladimir Kagan Nautilus swivel chair in a white crinkled fabric, a cream Maralunga leather sofa and enough vintage Murano glass to start up an antique store. A special shoutout to the gold-finished swan-neck bathroom sink faucets – horrific and hilarious in equal measure.
There’s even a stack of Ferrero Rocher so you can spoil an ambassador at a moment’s notice. The generous mini bar is included as part of the price, so come thirsty as the likes of Grey Goose, Nikka Whisky from the Barrel and Laurent-Perrier are all vying for your attention.
Still thirsty the next day? A Champagne breakfast awaits you – it’s all part of the package.
Inside Track
aguaSpa London
Curzon Cinema screening room
Sea Containers’ aguaSpa London is the kind of low-lit, softly scented spa that slows your pulse the moment you step inside. Treatments lean toward the indulgent, from regenerative massages to tailored facials built around suitably high-end products, while the curved relaxation suites deliver a rare sense of calm.
And there’s more of that to be found at Sea Containers’ own Curzon Cinema – a plush, intimate screening room with deep, sink-in seats and a well-stocked bar.
It’s not always easy to find relaxation this close to the City – but Sea Containers is very happy to whisk you far away.
