It takes a lot to impress the discerning crowd at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. But when Mercedes-Maybach unveiled its new SL 680 Monogram Series last summer, caps were duly doffed.
The new model was the talk of 2024’s Monterey Car Week for good reason: it’s the first time that Maybach has produced a sports car. Already renowned for its luxury saloons and SUVs – the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, S-Class, and EQS SUV – the SL 680 is Mercedes-Maybach’s vision of the perfect sports car.
And perfection is the name of the game here: the designers and engineers have taken every element of the iconic SL grand tourer to its natural conclusion – the motoring ‘nth degree’ if you will.
What does that look like in practice?
Well, first, there’s the unique finish. Offered in two striking design concepts – Red Ambience [pictured left] and White Ambience – the SL 680 Monogram Series features a two-tone exterior that pairs Obsidian Black Metallic with either MANUFAKTUR Garnet Red Metallic or Opalite White Magno. The bonnet can be customised with a Maybach pattern in Graphite Grey Uni, applied through a meticulous process involving hand-sanding and multiple layers of matte lacquer.
Under that beautifully adorned hood lies a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine producing 585hp and 800Nm of torque, paired with a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. The result is 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds, and a top speed electronically limited to 162mph.
Inside, the cabin is fitted with sustainably tanned Crystal White MANUFAKTUR Exclusive Nappa leather, extending across the door panels, centre console, and comfort seats, which feature a brand-new floral design. While Maybach-specific digital displays and animations enhance the bespoke experience further.
There are details for days: silver chrome trim; galvanised seat backrests; and the inside of the headlights is finished with high-quality accenting in rose gold.
To ensure a serene driving experience, Mercedes-Maybach has implemented extensive sound insulation, a noise-optimised exhaust system, and a comfort-oriented suspension setup with softer spring rates and revised steering hardware.
In essence, the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series offers a harmonious blend of performance, luxury, and exclusivity, setting a new benchmark
for open-top motoring.
