Jean Martell originally founded the first mix of 18 rare eaux-de-vie from his cellars in 1715 – and now Martell’s Cellar Master, Benoit Fil, has recreated the spirit by tracking down the same suppliers, ageing the mix in barrels made from the oak of a 300 year-old tree.
The blend is presented in a sculpture-like decanter which is surrounded by three clusters of metal arcs to evoke the anniversary, designed by artist Bernar Venet.
Square Mile got to try some of the precious tipple, which can only be sampled with a special pipette, and it’s pretty damn special. In amongst the elegant, rich notes of candied orange peel, blackcurrant, honey and gingerbread, you can almost taste the history.
