Archie Foal started life as a humble sock brand back in 2010, before adding chunky knitwear and cashmere sweaters to its lineup. It sold its wares on a market stall in Clapham, which even for the gentrified pavements of SW4 had fairly punchy prices – items sold for up to £400.

Fast forward eight years, and it’s now one of the pluckiest upstarts to take on the super luxe market sector.

Its founder Julian Turner boasts Ralph Lauren, Versace and Marks & Spencer on his CV, so perhaps it’s no surprise that the company is going from strength to strength – now with stores on New King’s Road and Stoke Newington.

The ethos behind the British brand is ‘buy better, buy less’ – in other words, quality over quantity. And quality certainly abounds: all its clothes are made using sustainably sourced yarns and fabrics, as well as traditional British craftsmanship.

As Turner explains: “Quality is something we take extremely seriously. We make extremely high quality garments which last up to ten years, look good and are responsibly sourced.”

Turner’s business partner Tessa Weale, who studied at Central St Martins, adds: “Real luxury, which is both understated and elegant, develops with wear and age and its true value unfolds over time.”

With a pared down aesthetic to provide what the team consider to be ‘enduring classics’, Archie Foal concentrates its efforts on timeless and iconic pieces.
