The Tumi is the Peruvian national symbol – a ceremonial knife used by ancient civilisations such as the Incas for sacrificing animals. These days a Tumi is more likely to be hung in homes for good luck. So, how did it become associated with an American leather and luggage brand? Well, company founder Charlie Clifford went on a Peace Corps mission to South Africa. While on the trip, he was inspired to create a brand that specialised in making the act of travelling easier.

Part of Tumi’s limited-edition 1975 collection, that pays homage to the brand’s founding year, the £1,495 square duffel is an instant travel classic. The bag has an external pocket for quick access to essential items (no more rummaging for your passport), while interior pockets are made for storing electronics and other accessories. There’s also an extra-tough black and brown ballistic nylon version, if you can’t be trusted with nice leather.
