There are certain destinations that make you want to become the sort of person who owns linen trousers and says things like, “we summer in the Adriatic.” Porto Montenegro is one of them.
But you know what’s even better than summering in the Adriatic? Living there all year round.
Porto Montenegro has spent the last decade transforming itself from a superyacht marina into something even cooler: a place for people to build a life. The waterfront village contains all the ingredients necessary for a luxurious existence but also a much rarer quality – a genuine sense of community. It's even more enticing than the views.
But the views are quite something. Turn one way and the dramatic Vrmac Mountain Range rises behind the marina, all rugged green slopes and winding trails, ideal for hiking or cycling. Turn the other and you’re looking out across the extraordinary Bay of Kotor – a UNESCO-listed ria often described as Europe’s southernmost fjord. If nothing else, your Instagram account will be getting a serious upgrade.
The residences
The latest addition to Porto Montenegro comes in the form of Vero and Versa, 202 new design-led residences at the heart of Porto Montenegro to be completed in 2028. Amenities include premium supermarkets, gourmet dining, upscale shopping, a major wellness centre with a half-Olympic pool, and even a Knightsbridge School. You lack for nothing, except maybe rain.
Vero comprises 155 residences with clean architectural lines, open balconies and leafy views. At the street level, you’ll find creative studios, independent boutiques and artisanal dining. Versa is the more intimate sibling, 47 homes built around natural materials, open layouts and interiors designed to maximise sunlight – because if you’re moving to Montenegro, you’d like to actually see the sun. There’s also a rooftop pool and fitness centre, naturally.
The resort
The entire place is walkable, unusually flat for this part of the world, and immaculately maintained. There are waterfront restaurants where lunch has a habit of turning into dinner, boutique shopping, and two five-star hotels should you wish to test the lifestyle ahead of taking the plunge. Also handy for the many friends and family who’ll develop a sudden urge to reconnect – “don’t worry, we’ll come to you.”
The timing is nearly as good as the weather. From 14 May, British Airways begins direct flights from London Heathrow to Tivat. Swapping grey drizzle for Adriatic sunshine now requires little more than a passport and some Factor 50. Tivat Airport is just ten minutes away, and UK nationals can stay visa-free for up to 90 days. Don’t tempt us.
What’s the cost should you decide to relocate? Remarkably affordable: prices start from €390,000 for a studio apartment. Montenegro places no restrictions on foreign ownership, property taxes are refreshingly low, and permanent residency becomes a possibility after five years.
A long weekend of sunshine, sea air and superlative food and drink? Sounds good. A decade? Now that sounds even better.
