Known as ‘Brazil to Brazil – The Complete Collection’, this visual piece of World Cup™ Final history comes in a velvet-lined, bespoke, handcrafted box with gold leaf lettering. In 2014, when the World Cup™ returned to Brazil, there were only 34 men still alive who had scored in the final – including Pelé, Sir Geoff Hurst, Ronaldo Nazario and Zinedine Zidane – and they are all in this package on 20x16-inch museum photographic prints, each one individually signed by the players.
The boxed collection also includes the book GOAL! signed by the author of the whole project, Northern Irish photographer and filmmaker Michael Donald, who photographed all 34 men. Donald had the idea many years ago, but the project accelerated in 2009 when ESPN came onboard and he set out to photograph and interview every single one of those living goalscorers, which he did, from Uruguay’s Alcides Ghiggia in 1950 to Germany’s Mario Gotze in 2014.
Donald's photographic quest spanned five years and 13 countries to produce the portraits and the book GOAL! It was the official FIFA book for the 2018 World Cup™ Finals in Russia, was translated into five languages and nominated for Sports Book of the Year. It also resulted in the ESPN film ‘I Scored a Goal in the FIFA World Cup™ Final’, which was nominated for an EMMY.
Donald’s intimate portraits are a mix of colour and black and white photographs and are accompanied by the players recalling their memories of the moments where they made football history. For example, of his 1970 World Cup™ Final goal, Pelé said, "It was God’s work. God took hold of me and lifted me up to head that goal."
A signed print by Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazario, who scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Germany in the 2002 World Cup™ Final.
A signed print by legendary footballer Pelé, who scored in Brazil’s wins in the 1958 and 1970 World Cup™ Finals.
Of the project, Michael Donald revealed, "I did headers with Pelé in São Paulo, nearly went home with Emmanuel Petit’s winners medal in Paris, had a beer at Dukla Praha with Josef Masopust, took penalties on the pitch at Munich’s Olympiastadion with Andreas Brehme, got a lift home from Carlos Alberto Torres in his van, cried with José Luis Brown in his home in Buenos Aires, and was held at gunpoint with Jairzinho in Rio’s Manguinhos favela."
The players who scored in two different World Cup™ Finals – Pelé, Zinedine Zidane and Paul Breitner – feature on single, signed prints. Of the 34 players photographed and interviewed, 13 have since passed away, making this collection impossible to replicate. Only six original sets are in existence, two of which remain in the public domain; each player also owns a copy of their own print, creating a tangible connection between collector and subject.
Goldin auction house Head of Revenue, Dave Amerman explained, “The World Cup's influence on global football cannot be overstated and those who scored in the final will be forever remembered among the greats. This collection brings that history together in a way that celebrates the international sport and honours their legacies… and it will never be replicated!”
A signed print by Zinedine Zidane, who scored for France during their wins in the both the 1998 and 2006 World Cup™ Finals.
A signed print by Sir Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick for England in the 4-2 win over West Germany in the 1966 World Cup™ Final victory.
