Golf is a peculiar sport. It involves moving your body in a most unusual manner in aid of advancing a tiny white ball into a small hole hundreds of yards away. It's never straightforward, rarely fair (that's why we talk about 'the rub of the green'), and has an infuriating habit of making grown adults look very silly. So… fancy giving it a whirl?
OK, perhaps that wasn't the finest introduction. How about this: golf is one of the most rewarding sports you could ever hope to play, a game that suits the methodical, the perfectionist, and the competitive equally well, and grows on you the more you play it. The golf course is an excellent venue for an extended business meeting, hospitable to all ages and genders, and in these strange pandemic-centred times is also the perfect socially-distanced sport.
Indeed, during lockdown and beyond, participation in golf has almost doubled year-on-year in both September and October, according to a study undertaken by Sports Marketing Surveys' (SMS). At a time when we've been confined to our households more than ever, golf is a welcome respite from Covid-19 claustrophobia.
Whether you've never been tempted to pick up a club before, or have previously shied away from learning this notoriously tricky sport, there is perhaps no better time to give it a go. As such, we've teamed up with Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador Bernhard Langer to clue you in on the basics.
In this five-part video series, we'll take you through everything from how to hold a club, navigating your way around the golf course, and picking up the key rules of this sport, so that you can get out there and enjoy yourself. There's no guarantees you'll play great right away, but you'll be equipped with a solid foundation to get you started.
If you've never heard of German golf legend Bernhard Langer, there could be no better teacher. As a professional player he has so far won more than 110 tournaments, including the famous Masters tournament twice. The 63-year-old has been at home on the golf courses of this world since 1974, and Mercedes-Benz has been accompanying him as a sponsor for more than 30 years.
Without further ado, let's hand over to Langer to take you through the basics.
