Daniel Henney is currently starring on the biggest show on TV right, Amazon's lavish production of The Wheel of Time – so it's only right the American actor and model has serious dream home goals.
"I have a small obsession with castles," says Henney. "I’ve been fixated on them since I was a young boy."
We're listening, Daniel... We also like castles.
"If money was no object, I would buy a run-down castle and restore it. I would do it with a modern twist, with all the amenities and up to date things one would want to necessitate life in 2021."
Amen to that. In a decade from now, we sincerely hope Henney is surveying the world from a fortified rampart – one with electricity and cable, naturally.
Life
What upcoming project(s) are you most excited about?
Honestly, it’s hard for me to think of much else but “The Wheel of Time” right now. However, I am excited about a film coming out next year in Korea that I did with an old friend of mine.
It’s called “Confidential Assignment 2.” I reunited with Hyun Bin, and we had a great time shooting. It’s a buddy-cop movie and a sequel to a highly successful film from a few years back. So I’m excited about that one.
What is your proudest professional accomplishment?
I think that overall, just being able to sustain a career in two separate markets is something that I’m very proud of. I started working in Korea in 2005, and to this day I’m still doing films and projects there. I speak the language now and it’s been a very fulfilling experience.
Keeping that side of the career going while taking on challenges like “The Wheel of Time” is something that I’m very proud of.
If you could change one thing about your career, what would it be?
There’s nothing that I would change. I think I’ve had an incredibly blessed run at this.
The only regret that I have is that I wish I would’ve started earlier. However, where I’m from, we didn’t have access to those sorts of resources in school. But starting with acting and drama earlier would’ve given me a stronger foundation to start from.
What do you hope to achieve that you haven’t yet?
I’m currently writing a film that I hope I can direct next year in Korea. It’s been a goal of mine for a long time. I want to jump into the director’s chair at some point.
I’ve learned so much over these years and I want to see if I can apply that knowledge in my own voice.
Outside of your family, who is / was your biggest inspiration?
Ernest Hemingway is someone that I find myself drawn to lately. I recently purchased a home in an area where Hemingway used to frequent when he was young in Michigan.
I think he lived many lives and took on various characters throughout those lives. He was mysterious, bold, questionably brave, and unquestionably talented. I have found motivation in this of late. So I guess that can also be deemed inspiring.
Tell us something nobody knows about you…
I hate big hotel rooms. They creep me out. I like cozy, smaller rooms. So we can pass on the presidential suite!
Style
What’s your favourite item of clothing – and what does it mean to you?
I have a pair of amazing Gucci boots from a collection circa 2010. They’re beautiful black leather, with a side zipper, and a perfect toe. You can dress them up or down. T
hey go with everything and they’re sneaky…. only certain folks know how much they’re really worth.
Favourite accessory – watch / jewellery / etc – and why is it special to you?
I’ve been working with Hamilton Watch for many years now. A few years back they honoured me with my own watch.
It’s a beautiful gold and black watch with my signature on the back of it. They only made 500.
I gave one to my dad, my uncle, and I kept one. My uncle recently passed away and we have his resting on top of our piano at home.
What items do you take on holiday and why?
I take a simple set of basic clothes. Black and white T-shirts, two pairs of jeans and two pairs of pants. White sneakers, black dress shoes and black boots.
I choose one watch for the trip. I take one pair of sunglasses, one bag, and my Tumi backpack. Whatever I forget or I lose, I’ll buy when I get there.
Oh yeah, I always take my travel guitar with me too.
Is there an item you threw away – or lost – that you really miss?
Oh my God, I just lost this really great pair of leather gloves. They were the perfect fit, and they went with everything. They were lightweight, and I could dress them up or dress them down.
I think I left them in the theatre during my premiere. The day was just so crazy, and I think they fell victim to that.
What’s next on your shopping list?
Well, that depends on how long our show goes for. Because I’ve decided that if we go a third and fourth season that I’m going to have to buy a car here in Prague.
I’m a huge Porsche fan, and I’d really love to find a vintage 911 in the Czech Republic I could eventually take back home with me.
What would you buy if money was no object?
Haha, if money was no object? I have a small obsession with castles. I’ve been fixated on them since I was a young boy. I think it’s because all my cartoons were fantasy-based. So I guess if money was no object, I would buy a run-down castle and restore it.
I would do it with a modern twist, with all the amenities and up to date things one would want to necessitate life in 2021. I’d make sure all the landscaping was perfect. I would have gardens in the long driveway…maybe even a moat…who knows…maybe one day!
