The Ghost Series I is a hard act to follow. It was a less formal, more contemporary and more dynamic younger brother to the Phantom. Since the model's launch in 2009, Rolls-Royce has been propelled to new heights, enjoying the best sales in its history. In July, Rolls-Royce reported another record rise in sales – up 33% year-on-year – and a significant chunk of that is down to pre-orders on this, the Ghost Series II.

The design tweaks are subtle but effective. Reshaped headlights, with unbroken daytime running lights, frame the more dynamic front end. The grille uprights are now curved for more of a jet-fin feel, while the bumpers have been re-sculpted to create a stronger stance. Inside, the interior is even plusher than its predecessor's. The lounge seat configuration is a particularly effective option – seats are gently angled towards each other to create a more intimate setting for business or, preferably, pleasure. If you're on your own, sit back and enjoy the Ghost's 18 individually-tuned speakers, including two hidden in the roof.

But the really clever stuff actually happens under the bonnet. Satellite Aided Transmission utilises GPS data to allow the car to see beyond what the driver can, anticipating the next move based on location and driving style. The system ensures that the Ghost is always in the correct gear when negotiating turns, motorway exists and roundabouts.

Yes, it's big – but, by God, it's clever.
