Although a relatively recent addition to the Formula 1 calendar, the Bahrain Grand Prix has already proved itself an historic sporting event. Upon its introduction in 2004, it was the first ever Formula 1 race to be held in the Middle East, and was subsequently awarded ‘Best Organised Grand Prix’ by the FIA.

In 2014, the race was held as a night event – only the second nocturnal race in Formula 1 history – to such success that it has remained under floodlights ever since. The roar of the engines beneath the stars of the Sakhir desert is a thrilling experience for all lovers of motor sport. The 2018 race will take place from 6-8 April, so there is plenty of time for you to reserve your space in one of the 50,000 grandstand seats.

Bahrain is famous for its pearl diving industry, which dates back several thousand years

However, there is much to occupy visitors beside the cars: Bahrain has a unique culture and heritage within the Middle East. Any food connoisseurs must pay a visit to Block 338, Bahrain’s pedestrianised ‘dining district’ with restaurants serving cuisine from across the world. Once you’ve finished your meal, check out one of the many art galleries in the area or take in some live music: Block 338 hosts a busy nightlife scene with plenty of bars to choose from. Indeed, you could easily spend a full day and evening in this district alone without ever being short of things to do.

Historically, Bahrain is famous for its pearl diving industry, which dates back several thousand years. Bahraini pearls are renowned for their uncommon quality and lustre. At one point Bahrain supplied 80% of the global pearl market – quite a remarkable contribution. A number of pearl diving tours allow visitors to live this history themselves while experiencing the majesty of the Arabian Gulf beneath the waves. An added incentive? Any pearls you find are yours to keep.

Either way, there’s no doubt a trip to Bahrain will be full of hidden treasures.
