There are three exceptions to this rule: a wedding ring, a watch and a pair of cufflinks. When it comes to the latter, head to Deakin & Francis. Founded in 1786, it is one of the world's oldest cufflink makers and is still based on its original premises.

The workshops produce handmade cufflinks in precious metal, incorporating vitreous enamel and fine gemstones. Over the last two centuries, its jewellers and silversmiths have created more than 5,000 cufflink designs. Prices range from £150 up to £25,000, depending on the degree of flashiness you're willing to go to.
