Three of the worst movie sequels ever made
As Zoolander 2 prepares to hit our screens and word gets out that Blade Runner 2 is definitely happening, we're getting our cynical hat on and issuing a word of caution: a sequel isn't always a good idea. We remember three times when it went very, very wrong

Speed 2: Cruise Control
Everything that was great about original action movie Speed – fast-moving buses, explosions, on-screen flirting between Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves – is distinctly lacking the second time around. Instead, the wittily named Speed 2: Cruise Control has all the ingredients of a sinking ship (wahey!) As the title suggests, this time around, unlucky old Annie (Sandra Bullock) is stuck on a cruise ship as it snails its way on a collision course with an oil slick. Worse still, she’s stuck on board with new love interest Alex Shaw – aka Jason Patric – who is about as enigmatic as a bowl of Shredded Wheat.

The Matrix Revolutions
With its computer conspiracy theories, bullet dodging, pill popping and gravity defying fight scenes, The Matrix become the groundbreaking sci-fi film of the 1990s, and geeks everywhere bought themselves a pair of tiny glasses and a long leather coat in jubilation. While the second film, The Matrix Reloaded, wasn’t entirely awful – an epic car chase is its redeeming feature – The Matrix Revolutions lost the plot completely. Not even the film’s special effects could detract from a ridiculous script full of baffling philosophising, delivered by an increasingly wooden Keanu Reeves. It's all summed up by a minor character, who at one point blurts out “It doesn’t make sense”.

Dumb and Dumberer
Dumb and Dumberer takes us back to 1986, to when “mentally challenged” best friends Harry and Lloyd were teenagers and charts the boys’ attempts to get out of the “special needs” department and into regular high school life. Hmm, sounds hilarious. This time, though, there’s no Jim Carrey, no Jeff Daniels, and virtually zero laughs, aside from the occasional poo joke and racist or homophobic slur. Despite its awfulness, Dumb and Dumberer managed to double its budget by earning almost $40m worldwide, which means technically it was a hit. Nice one, Hollywood. We guess the joke’s on us.
