Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte
12 December 2015
Olympic gold medalist Anthony Joshua had stopped 14 opponents without going past the third round. However his fifteenth opponent promised a stiffer challenge. Dillian Whyte had beaten Joshua as an amateur, and promised to replicate the result as a professional. Also unbeaten, and unintimidated by Joshua’s knockout credentials, Whyte’s brash confidence, attracted considerable interest to the fight. Joshua dominated the first round, and a ring invasion from Whyte’s camp nearly brought the whole thing to a premature end. However Whyte rallied and rocked Joshua with a monster left hook in round two. Joshua fought back, walked his man down, and settled the matter in the seventh.

Why we want the rematch...
In the two years since beating Whyte, Joshua has become the biggest star in boxing bar none. He beat Charles Martin to take the IBF world title, then stunningly stopped Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium to claim the WBA and IBO belts as well. (You may have heard about that one.) Whyte hasn’t enjoyed the same level of success, but Joshua remains the only defeat on his record, and his victory over hardened warrior Dereck Chisora was one of the finest fights of 2016. Joshua has frequently expressed his interest in a rematch; with both fighters entering the prime of their careers, it could produce something special.

Billy Joe Saunders vs Chris Eubank Jr

Although they fought on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs Dereck Chisora II (not a rematch that merits inclusion in this article), the animosity between Eubank Jr and and Saunders generated more interest than the main event. Saunders, raised in a Romanichal travelling community, and Eubank Jr, the Brighton-based son of a legendary boxer-turned-celebrity, were polar opposites as personalities and fighters. British champion Saunders outboxed Eubank Jr in the early rounds, yet the challenger enjoyed increasing success as the fight wore on. However it was too little, too late as Saunders held off Eubank to claim a split decision.

Why we want the rematch
Ironically, it is the defeated Eubank whose star has risen higher in subsequent years – certainly in terms of recognition. Saunders beat Andy Lee to win the WBO middleweight title in 2015, but has only fought twice since then, recently outpointing Willie Monroe Jr in a lacklustre affair. Meanwhile Eubank Jr has flattened all-comers, winning and alienating fans with his confidence and showboating style. With Eubank Jr committed to the World Boxing Super Series, and Saunders seeking a fight with the brutal Gennady Golovkin, it may be sometime until they share a ring again – but business between the pair remains unfinished.

James DeGale vs George Groves
21 May 2011
After winning gold in the 2008 Olympics, James DeGale was touted by many as the next superstar of British boxing. In 2011 DeGale faced old amateur rival George Groves for the British and Commonwealth title. As always, personal animosity – certainly on DeGale’s part – contributed to a high level of media attention as the golden boy of Beijing faced his biggest test yet. However Groves hadn’t read the script, and handed DeGale his first professional defeat via split decision.

Why we want the rematch
Although DeGale has enjoyed a successful career, the superstardom that seemed attainable post-Beijing has so far proved elusive. Most of his major fights have occurred in America, including his victory over Andre Dirrell to claim the IBF world title, and his recent draw with Badou Jack (who beat Groves in his third world title attempt). In contrast, Groves has fought his biggest battles before the British public: the two defeats to Froch (DeGale fought on the undercard of the Wembley fight), the post-Jack rehabilitation with trainer Shane McGuigan, and the long-awaited world title after stopping Fedor Chudinov. Groves is signed to the World Boxing Super Series – and faces a potential blockbuster with Eubank Jr – while DeGale has yet to fight since his draw with Jack. A rematch would be massive…but will it happen?
